Northridge Smog Testing
Getting Your Car Smog Checked: The Process
If you have never had your car smog checked before, then you probably aren’t sure what to expect. If you have been to the DMV before, then you know what a boring experience this is, and you may be wondering, “Will my smog check be anything like this?” The answer is no, and this article will tell you exactly what happens and what you can expect at a Northridge smog check.
What do I need to bring?
Before going to the Northridge smog check station, the only things that you need to bring with you (other than your vehicle, of course) is your DMV notice and a form of payment. Everything else that is necessary is provided by the station.
Speaking of payment, you can expect to pay anywhere from $40-$70 for you smog check. The national chains are going to charge more, and your mom-and-pop shops are typically going to charge less. You can usually even find a coupon to get the cheapest Northridge smog check. My favorite trick is just asking the technician if they can give you a discount! Remember, everything is negotiable!
It is also good to drive your car around for a bit before going to the smog check station. If your engine is cold, it is more likely that you may fail the test. Drive around for about twenty minutes prior to going to the smog check station.
How does the smog check work?
When you arrive at the smog check station, you will pull your vehicle into a lane and park it there so the technician can get to work. They will first attach a dynamometer to the tailpipe of the car so that the emission levels can be properly tested. Your car is not shut off during this time, as the technician needs it to be running in order to successfully gain their information.
The next step in the Northridge smog check is for the muffler of your vehicle to be inspected. Why is this important? One of the main functions of a muffler is to decrease the amount of emissions being let out from your car. If your muffler is not working well, this could lead to failing the smog check and needing to have the muffler replaced.
By checking the muffler, the technician also looks for holes or any leaks inside of it. These holes, of course, contribute to excessive vehicle emissions. If the holes are fairly small, then your vehicle may not need a muffler replacement right away.
Finally, the technician will do a quick under-the-hood check. What they are looking for is that all of the pipes and hoses of your car are working properly and doing what they are supposed to! If not, then this can also lead to a failure of your smog check.
The best Northridge smog check is a fairly easy and painless process. Depending on the line of cars at the smog check station, it will only take about ten minutes from start to finish. Where you live and the make of your car determines how often you will need a smog check. In California, a smog check for your car is usually required every two years, with some exceptions. Although it is pretty uncommon to fail your smog check, it does happen. In the event that you fail, the repairs needed to pass will not take long and you will be back on the road in no time!
